Test Axioms – An Introduction

Bookmark and Share Bookmark and Share

Is it possible to define a set of axioms that provide a framework for software testing that all the variations of test approach currently being advocated align with or obey? In this respect, an axiom would be an uncontested principle; something self-evidently and so obviously true and not requiring proof. What would such test axioms look like? This paper summarises some preliminary work on defining a set of Test Axioms. Some applications of the axioms that would appear useful are suggested for future development. It is also suggested the work of practitioners and researchers is on very shaky ground unless we refine and agree these Axioms. This is a work in progress.

I am a test manager working for a leading Insurance company in UK. I never heard of Test Axioms till now. This seems to be a very good topic, which I can adopt in my test strategy in the future. Thanks for publishing this.  by Robert

Hi Paul, as Robert said, I also did not heard about “Test Axiom” before, though I am new to testing and involved in manual testing since 1 year in India. After reading your article, I personally felt that this is a big topic of debate, “Does Test Axiom Exist?”, because always we come across the word “testing Good Practice”, noting is defined as a rule, every company follow their good practice or lessen learnt from previous testing project. Please correct me if I am wrong and give your expert comments, so that I can improve my understanding Regards(Manish)  by ManishKumar

Paul, This is a great article with some truly original thinking, many thanks. I of course agree with all the suggested axioms and if I was to add one it might be; The validity of the testing is proportional to the quality of the test environment. Once again, thanks for a great article. Tony Simms http://www.roque.co.uk  by TonySimms

Paul, Very impressive article, as in my understanding the concept of Test-Axioms you have explained is new to market; I have a query, what kind of response you get when you explain or speak in any seminar on this topic., Best Regards.  by Preston
